Showcase Review: Shane Filan LIVE Presented by AMPed and Universal Music Singapore

By  November 13, 2013

Good Music? Yep.

Way, WAY too adorable accent? Definitely.

World famous? No doubt (not the band) about it.

Shane Filan, the de factor lead singer of Westlife, graced the halls and dancefloor of Zouk when he played his first solo show in Singapore, to support his new album You And Me. Fans turned up in droves, lining up outside and around the club, waiting for entry. The crowd was, unsurprisingly, made up of female young adults, who probably knew him from his boy band days.

Inside, the restless crowd was getting drinks and waiting in anticipation for the arrival of the Irish heartthrob. Kiss 92FM DJ, Claressa Monterio, even turned up to host the event, getting us ready with fan chants and a lot of witty banter.

As the crowd chanted, Shane popped up on stage, and, you guessed it, hell broke loose. He wasted no time and got right down to business, singing his debut single Everything to Me. For a guy that’s been singing, recording and touring since the late ‘90s, Shane’s voice is in amazing shape – never missing a note, beat or queue.

What’s more, everyone in the audience knew every word of the song, singing along in perfect harmony. Shane then introduced one of his favorite songs from the album, Once. The down-tempo song was nonchalantly relaxed, like a pop-folk version of Corrine Bailey Rae’s Put Your Records On.

The spotlights dimmed again and the music stopped. For a short intermission, Shane started to talk about his solo career and plans of returning to Singapore for a few more showcases and, possibly, a full-fledged concert in the summer of 2014. The crowd roared in response, prompting Shane to start performing his next single Knee Deep In My Heart.

But the highlight of the night was probably when Shane surprised us with a tune from his boy band days, bringing out What About Now to crazy screams.

By the end of the showcase, our voices were sore but spirits lifted. Even though we didn’t get any classic Westlife fare (World of Our Own or My Love anyone?), it was an evening that I, nor anyone else in the audience, would give up or ever forget.

Setlist:
1. Everything to Me
2. Once
3. Knee Deep In My Heart
4. What About Now
5. About You
