Album Review: Disclosure's 'Caracal' Doesn't Live Up To Their Scene-Bursting Debut Album

By  November 4, 2015

Don't let the title lead you astray, Caracal is still a pleasing listen for House/UK Garage fans from the English electronic duo Disclosure, but if the Lawrence brothers are to get on par with their impressive debut release in 2013's Settle, they'd probably have to go for more risks, rather than playing it safe; like getting Sam Smith to sing again for instance.

Omen is nonetheless one of the better tracks here with Sam, who has these 2 men to thank for his success, "ooh-ing" a catchy hook to round off a rhythmic groove that backs up the singer's falsettos very well. It definitely improves on from the very bland opening track that wastes The Weeknd's talent in Nocturnal.

BPM levels are pretty high throughout the tracklist, from the upbeat house track Hourglass featuring the duo Lion Babe's soulful vocals, to the more techno beats in the classy tracks Jaded and Echoes, which has the best written chorus here, lyrically and melodically.

Disclosure has included a stellar cast of featuring singers from Lorde in the slightly pop-ish Magnets to Gregory Porter in the trance-inducing Holding On and also Miguel who sings heartbroken statements in front of the driving beats in Good Intentions.

They haven't broken new ground, but Disclosure still has laid out more solid work in their field of the house music and mainstream pop (to some extent) with this decent UKG album.

Track Gems: Echoes, Good Intentions, Masterpiece, Omen
