#Laneway2017 Lineup Revealed: Underwhelming Reveal Or Indie Paradise?

By  September 15, 2016

Laneway Festival Singapore has revealed their initial lineup of acts for the festivals’ 7th year at Gardens By The Bay on 21 January 2017.

The reactions were a mixed bag, with most considering the lineup a ‘downgrade’ from this year's stellar lineup. How did we think it fare up?

The Pros

Who Run The World? Girls!

20-year-old Norwegian singer AURORA will be making her debut in Singapore to charm us with her distinct voice and charming stage presence.

Not To Be Missed: NAO, Sampa The Great, and Singapore’s very own Sam Rui!

Rock Is NOT Dead.

White Lung will be there for your fix of Garage Rock while Gang Of Youths fills out the ‘up-and-coming indie rock band’ slot this Laneway.

Not to be missed: Kathleen Hanna’s band The Julie Ruin and Bob Moses!

Anticipated Debuts!

Glass Animals has already done the mandatory festival circuit just two years since their debut album was released, from Glastonbury to Coachella and everything in between… except Laneway. This will be the bands’ first trip to Asia too!

Mick Jenkins’ new jazz-influenced new single Drowning has already achieved the coveted Best New Track on Pitchfork. Part of the uprising of hip-hop artists from Chicago led by Chance The Rapper, Mick will be making his debut in Singapore as one of the few rappers to ever grace Laneway.

The Cons

Too Many Producers?!

It seems like an easiest way to fill out a festival lineup now is to dump producers or DJs and spread them all throughout the evening. Nevertheless, producers like Mr. Carmack, Tourist, Clams Casino and Floating Points will all be there for the interested.

Not Again…

There are good acts and then there are acts that shouldn’t be back so soon. Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker is very much welcome to debut his new show here, but Jagwar Ma and Tycho back within two years? Hmm…

Don’t fret if you haven’t seen you favourite act on the lineup yet, as Laneway are to reveal a couple more headliners in the coming weeks. Remember when The 1975 were added as a last minute headliner this year?

Check out the full lineup below.
