Getting To Know Aussie band, Runaway Weekend, And Their New Single 'Heartless'

By  May 10, 2017

Runaway Weekend is a 4 piece pop rock band from Adelaide, Australia. The band's recent single Heartless is their first release since their debut EP, Déjà Vu, which was released last year.

Déjà Vu was a spectacular blend of different sounds, lyrics, and vocals. Their music could be described as alternative, surreal and cinematic, especially their first EP.

Heartless, however, has taken a slightly more energetic pop route and the vibe is fresh and interesting. To find out more about the song and the band, we spoke to Danny Cunningham, guitarist of Runaway Weekend.

1. Your new song is a bit different compared to the songs off the Déjà Vu EP. What do you think of Heartless, compared to your previous releases?

It's a lot more pop if that's what you mean. We've always strived for a cinematic sound and I think we achieved that with what we did, within a pop context.

2. How did the idea for this song come about?

Just the band messing about with ideas after listening to songs we like really. From there we build it up and keep sculpting the song to a place we're happy with

3. Your music videos are very aesthetically interesting and unique. What inspires these creative ideas?

I like to watch a lot of films and music in films is a really important aspect. In film it's the picture that's the biggest focus, and the music helps get the emotion across to the viewer. With us it's the same thing just swapped around.

4. What is the most challenging thing you’ve had to face as a band?

There are a lot of things that get in the way of the band being what it should be. I think cost is a huge issue, especially when it comes to touring. You need to tour to get your name out, but the nearest city to Adelaide is about 10 hours away, whereas in Europe or the US you could drive 1 or 2 hours and be in a new city with a new audience. That huge distance between cities can make costs go up and makes it harder for smaller bands like us to get around.

5. If you could tour anywhere in the world, which country would you go to first?

I reckon I'd like to do the UK and Europe. I dig the culture there.

6. What is your favourite memory from being in Runaway Weekend?

Too many to count. For me I reckon it's when Nic Pernini first joined the band and the 5 of us went out and celebrated. Just good times.

7. If you could listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Morning Glory by Oasis. Or Someday by Nickelback.

8. What do you hope to achieve as a band this year?

It would be cool to start building the foundations of getting us overseas and playing shows. Looking at our Spotify and social statistics we've got more people listening to us in the US and U.K. than here in Aus which is crazy.

9. Is there anything a fan has given or said to you that has stuck with or inspired you?

We get a lot of messages from people telling us that our music has created new friendships and how thankful they are for it.

10. What is Runaway Weekend’s ultimate goal?

In order:

Thebarton Theatre

Adelaide Entertainment Centre

Wembley

11. If you knew everyone in the whole world was listening, what would you want to tell them?

Be nice to everyone and listen to Heartless.

Bonus Question: Pineapple on pizza. Yah or Nah?

Depends who's eating it.
