Despite emerging into the music scene at a young age, Norwegian DJ and producer Alan Walker proves that nothing’s impossible with ardent passion and persistent grit.

Having supported acts the likes of Rihanna and Justin Bieber, Walker initially started producing music only in his bedroom for the record label NoCopyrightSounds. This then led to the roaring success of his single, Faded, and a series of follow-up singles currently dominating the EDM scene.

We spoke to Walker about the symbolism in his music videos, his views on being a DJ, and a whole lot more in the interview below.

1. What kind of music did you listen to growing up and how did it influence your music now?

Techno music was my music of preference. That was also part of the reason for me wanting to pursue music production. After watching movies, I also gained an interest for film scores, so that has definitely influenced my music as well. Especially when it comes to melodies.

2. How do you choose vocalists for your songs? Is there a main criteria that you follow?

It varies from song to song. For Tired, I was actually presented with the demo vocals from Gavin James to begin with. And for Faded, we ended up going with Iselin Solheim’s vocals, even though she was initially intended for demo only. It was just so great, and went well with the song.

3. Prior to your success in the EDM scene, you were interested in computer programming and graphic design. How much did your interests in such areas impact your career in music?

It had a lot to say in developing my visual identity as an artist, and is something that you can find traces from in my artwork, logos, videos, and more.

4. The music videos for Alone and Faded start with characters with masks on, which they later take off at the end of the video. Can you explain the symbolism behind that recurring concept?

The mask is not about me wanting to hide my identity. Actually, I wear the mask to symbolize that people are all the same and all equal. For me, anyone could be the person behind the mask, and anyone can achieve amazing things.

5. How do you keep track of ideas you randomly get when you're touring?

That’s a good question. I’ll have to record or write them down somewhere, or share the idea with someone else in order to not forget it.

6. Can you share with us one song that you adore and wish you could've produced yourself?

My all-time favorite is ‘Time’ by Hans Zimmer.

7. Do you prefer to be a member of an audience or playing for a crowd? Why?

I enjoy both, actually. There’s nothing better than being on stage. But I also like to attend a show as a regular fan, especially with some of the artists I like.

8. Many EDM producers are drawing the lines between being a DJ and an artist. They think being an artist is more than just about the "drops" in their songs. What element in your music do you think sets you apart from the usual stereotypical impressions of being a DJ?

First of all, it’s important to note that you can still be either a DJ or an artist, without being both. And there’s obviously a lot of artists who don’t DJ, and vice versa. Also, I agree that being an artist is more than just creating drops. The music that is released by the most successful artists today is clearly a testament to that, because they are often complete tracks and not just driven by drops. You can see that on the charts as well, as EDM music has been a part of the top charts in recent time.

9. Which festival that you've played at is the most memorable for you and why?

Probably Main Stage at Tomorrowland this year. It was amazing!

10. Name 3 musicians that you can't stop listening to right now.

It varies from time to time. But at the moment: Hans Zimmer, Kygo and Armin Van Buuren

Have you ever tried sending DMs to your favourite celebrities?

Unless you are a celebrity yourself, the DM you sent is usually left unseen. Don't be discouraged or take it personal, because most of the time, celebrities are too busy to scroll through and reply the hundreds and thousands of messages they get each day.

However, out of a hundred celebrities who do not look at their DMs, there would always be a gem who does. Here are three singers who are known to reply fan DMs.

1. Rihanna

From relationships to coming out, Rihanna doesn't hesitate to give quality life advice to her fans whenever they need it the most. It's no wonder why her Navy is so loyal to her, seeing how the love is reciprocated! She even retweeted our tweet back in 2011!

2. Ariana Grande

Ariana is a total sweetheart and she has her DM replies to back her up. If you're ever looking for someone to celebrate with or just to talk to, Ariana's your girl.

3. Nicki Minaj

The rapper made an ambitious statement to pay off her fans' education loans if they get all As, and actually did as she promised. So slide into Nicki's DMs with your bank information and who knows - you may just be the next lucky fan to receive a sum of money.

Imagine "Little Mix feat. Rihanna".

Little Mix recently made a trip down to iHeartRadio's Honda Stage during their time on Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman Tour in America to perform their own rendition of Love On The Brain by Rihanna.

As usual, the ladies of Little Mix totally smashed their version by starting off the first part of badgalriri's track with their iconic a cappella harmonies and cruised through the rest of it with their perfect vocals and interpretation of the song.

You must already know by now that Little Mix has an amazing song off their third album called Secret Love Song. The single features American singer Jason Derulo who had previously heard their version of his hit Want To Want Me when the radio hosts of Shazam Top 20 played it for him to react to.

Clearly impressed by their flawless vocals, the collaboration was bound to happen and it did. So we are crossing our fingers and hoping that the same would happen when Rihanna hears Little Mix's cover of Love On The Brain!

The xx have just released possibly the best album of their career this month, garnering rave reviews over the new sound they have gone for that’s more positive and upbeat.

Their new cover of Drake & Rihanna’s Too Good, however, is far from that. Without the dancehall vibes, the song is actually pretty darn sad to listen to.

This is not the first time Drake, Rihanna and The xx have collaborated together, having previously collaborated on a modern-day classic, Take Care.

Additionally, The xx’s Intro is also famously sampled on Rihanna’s very-forgotten Drunk On Love off Talk That Talk album.

Spotify's Top Artists Of 2016

Spotify has revealed 2016's top artists and we're thrilled to see so many of our favourites make it to the lists.

Here are some of our favourites and more notable picks!

Drake's love life this year may not flourished as well as he probably would've hoped (with Rihanna in particular), but at least his numbers of Spotify are! The rapper was crowned as the world's most streamed artist and his album, Views, that was dropped in April was also the most streamed abum of the year. And how many times was 2016's top hit a.k.a. One Dance streamed? 970 million times.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande emerged as the most streamed female artist in Singapore and second in the world just behind Rihanna!

Twenty One Pilots

I can't even begin to describe how proud I feel of Twenty One Pilots for being the 4th most streamed artist in the world. Their 2015 album, Blurryface, also deservingly made it as one of 2016's most streamed albums!

Fifth Harmony

How apt is it that Fifth Harmony is 2016's 5th most streamed female artist in both Singapore and across the globe???

The stats have proven that Zayn is on the right direction for going solo. The ex-One Direction member was named as the year's top breakout artist!

Rihanna is 2016's was not only the top R&B artist, but also the most streamed female artist in the world with over 2.5 billion streams to her name!

Panic! At The Disco

I would say that it's been a long time since Panic! At The Disco deviated from their roots in the emo genre, so the fact that they were this year's top emo artist probably shows that many people have been reminiscing of the early 2000s this year!

Here's my top artists and tracks of 2016!

Biggest Ships That Need To Go Canon In 2017!

2016 is coming to a close. We have had a fair share of celebrity couples getting together and also couples splitting up. We break down the biggest ships that need to go canon in 2017.

1.     Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez

After the release of We Don’t Talk Anymore, we were almost certain that they were soon going to get together. There was so much chemistry when Charlie Puth joined Selena Gomez at her show. However in the following months, when asked about Selena, Charlie admitted that they don’t really talk anymore. It is such a pity, but 2017 will be a new year and maybe?

2.     Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift

Ed Sheeran has been in Taylor Swift’s squad since 2013 when they collaborated on Everything Has Changed and went on tour together. They have remained the closest of friends throughout the years but we’re thinking maybe they can give it a shot? No doubt, Ed has confessed that he would not date Taylor, as she is too tall.

3.     Rihanna & Drake

This is the most talked about moment at this year’s Video Music Awards and this is why they definitely need to get together. There had been rumours that they couple finally went canon after the award show but there had also been rumours that they have broken up. Well, we will never know what is exactly going on but one can hope!

4.     Joe Jonas & Hailee Steinfield

From their chemistry in Rock Bottom to Joe Jonas pranking Hailee Steinfield during April Fools’, they have proven to be really close. This is why they are on our list of the biggest ships that need to happen. We do know that Joe has recently been spotted with actress Sophie Turner, but they are just so cool together!

5.     Ashton Irwin & Halsey

Their shippers exploded during Halloween when these pictures surfaced online through their Instagram and Twitter accounts. Ashton Iwrin and Halsey have been friends for many years and have been spotted together at several concerts and night outs. Do you want them to go canon?

Ex-Boyfriend and superproducer Calvin Harris might have been the brains behind the electronic smash This Is What You Came For, but the song was lyrically all Nils Sjöberg. Of course, Nils Sjöberg was later outed as none other than Taylor Swift herself.

Since she wrote the song and all, it makes perfect sense for her to perform it. In her only performance of 2016, Taylor slipped in a piano-driven cover of This Is What You Came For and serenaded to the 80,000-strong crowd in Austin, Texas.

"If you know it, maybe you could sing along, and I could get to know what that feels like, to hear it sung back to me."

The show marked the 10th anniversary of her debut self-titled album but surprisingly, nothing was performed off that album.

Instead tracks from all her other albums all made the setlist, including fan favourite Holy Ground before closing off with Shake It Off.

Rumours have it that Lady Gaga will headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2017 in the footsteps of Katy Perry, Beyonce and Bruno Mars who were the  headliners of the past shows.

As much as we love everything that she stands for and her showmanship, she already performed at the Super Bowl 50 early this year and, well, we kinda want to see someone else this time...

So we reckon these 3 acts below should be the ones who headline the show instead!

1) Rihanna x Drake

2016 has been a helluva year for these two and we'd love to see them take the big stage together in the next year!

2) Britney Spears

It's Britney, bitch.

3) J.Lo

We have no doubt J.Lo a.k.a. Slay Lo has what it takes to headline the show

Do you agree that these 3 acts should headline Super Bowl Halftime Show 2017 instead of Lady Gaga? Or who else do you think should do it?
